"頭成兜"
Tônari kabuto
[ Period ] Edo
[ Size ] W(max.) : 18cm, height : 27cm
[ Feature ] It is composed of : Tônari-kabuto in "日根野鉢"(Hi-ne-no-hachi), made of iron. Fukikaeshi and mayu-hisashi in cloth. Shikoro in threes steps. Mae-date-mono is in kuri-hangetsu shape. Wakidate-mono is shika-tsuno-gata form.

[ Condtions ] Tear at back cloth. Strings of shikoro have some broke. Gold leaf of wakidatemono detached some part.

"陣笠 丸に十文字紋"
Jingasa : maru ni jû-mon-ji mon
[ Period ] Edo, end of
[ Size ] Diameter : 34cm, height : 13cm
[ Feature ]
A hole at the top of jingasa, "座金物"(zagane-mono) placed. Gold painted design, considering the intention of "星冑" which composed of some plates, displaced in tuns with black-red lacquerd ones.

Family crest, "丸に十字"(cross in circle), in front. "総角"(agemaki) is attached in the hole of agemaki-tsuki of back. Gold painting was made for inside.

Family crest, "丸に十字"(cross in circle), was famous of that of Shimazu clan in Edo period. In other fuedral lords,four families, such as Ô-kubo, Naitô, Katô and Mori. Other ten "旗本"(hatamotos) used this mark. ("綱要日本紋章学"(compendium of Japan heraldry) by NUMATA Yorisuke (published by "新人物往来社" in Shôwa 52)

There is a hole at the top of hachi, part of kabuto. It is called "天辺の穴"(hole of heaven) or "息出の穴"(hole of breathing) . There is a "座金物"(metal fitting), called "八幡座"(Hachiman-za). It is prohibited putting finger in since the place has been believed that "神"(kami) resting holy place.("日本の甲冑"(armour of Japan) edited by "日本甲冑武具研究会" published by "徳間書店"(Tokuma publishing) in Shôwa 38
)

"面頬"
Menpô
[ Period ] Edo
[ Size ] Width : 20cm, height : 11cm
[ Feature ] "頬当"(hô-ate), "烈勢面"(ressei-men) and "髭"(mustache) are attached below eye holes. "下"(sage) is composed of 4 steps. Inside is red lacquered.

"頬当", "烈勢面", and "髭" under eyes are remaining. "下"(sage) is consist of four plates. Back side colored in "朱" (vermilion-lacquered). Metal fitting, called "折釘"(ori-gane), tying strings, attached.

"天(ten)" thickness : 0.82cm, "地(chi)" thickness : 0.45cm, "天(ten)" weight 145.4g, "地(chi)" weight 81.3g
[ Feature ] According with the book, titled "提灯陣笠御布告書 (官版 御用御書物所 須原屋茂兵衛・和泉屋市兵衛)"(Chô-chin jingasa regulation notice)(officially published and printed, SUWARAYA Mohei, IZUMIYA Ichibei), jingasa with "紋并筋裏トモ金" should be used by "非役華族及非役四位以上"(non-office but honored peerage and non-office but higher than fourth rank)

This jingasa has same family crest on "庇裏" (hisashi-ura(back of visor))

Five families used "三引両" from Tokugawa era and later (e.g. : "浅野"(Asa-no), 安部(A-be), 間部(Ma-be), 三浦(Mi-ura) and 分部(Wake-be))( cf. : "綱要日本紋章学" ("Compendium of Japanese heraldry" by NUMATA Yori-suke, published by "新人物往来社"(shin-jin-butsu-ô-rai-sha publishing ) Showa52(1977))

"陣笠 剣梅鉢紋"

[ Feature ] According with the book, titled "提灯陣笠御布告書 (官版 御用御書物所 須原屋茂兵衛・和泉屋市兵衛)"(Chô-chin jingasa regulation notice)(officially published and printed, SUWARAYA Mohei, IZUMIYA Ichibei), jingasa with "紋金筋銀裏朱"(mon-kin-suji-gin-ura-shu) was used by "判任"(junior official)

It was considered that the distribution of using "梅紋"(plumn pattern) was fit with those of the places faith for "天満宮"(ten-man-gû) done. Specifically, "美濃"(Mino), "加賀"(Kaga), east part of "美作"(Mima-saka), "苫田"(Toma-ta) and "勝田"(Katsu-ta). Family of "有元"(Ari-moto), "植月"(Uetsuki), "鷹取"(Takatori), or "田等"(Tatô)( cf. : "綱要日本紋章学" ("Compendium of Japanese heraldry" by NUMATA Yori-suke, published by "新人物往来社"(shin-jin-butsu-ô-rai-sha publishing ) Showa52(1977))

"金工鑑定秘訣"

"肥後金工録 全"

[ Feature ] The metal fittings which created in Higo during Edo period had been attracting many peoples since they had high artistic values. The study book of "肥後金工"(Higo metal works) known as pioneer was written and edited by Mr. NAGAYA Shigena with cooperation of KAMIYOSHI Rakujyu and others. He was ex-samurai of Yamauchi feudal family of Tosa, then assingned to Kumamoto as Imperial Army colonel. Using his spare time, he cocentrated to study "肥後金工".

He made a list of each school in organized manner, corrected the works so that it contained the illustrations as well. Published by "吉川弘文館"(Yoshikiawa Kôbunkwan)

[ Feature ] Hami is a kind of harness is also known as bridles (bridle). Jockey will play a major role in a fine intention communicated to the horse. This product is a three-point set of iron Hami made in the Edo period. Shape and smooth texture rounded, such as the mobility of the connection portion that assumes the various movements of the horse, it devised to enhance the function has condensed. Design caring horse is attractive.

[ Feature ] A large sized a pair of arrowheads. Iron arrowhead has peneteration power.In tumulus period, soya, hirane and karimata, trio the arrowheads had come to be appeared which became oringin of later periods' arrowheads. Relatively heavier ones, it is presumed that there is spoiled for power.

Ya-no-ne of triangle shaped arrowhead has openwork, on the nakago, there is a signature "Sanada Hachirou Tametomo"

History of Edo wa-zao (Japanese fishing rods) began from the time of Kyoho. Initially, it was part time job of Samurai. In the end of Edo period, first generation To-saku made huge development so that there were a lot of lovers. They joined his school, then some of them became the master of making fishing rods. Then the technic had developped to the level of now a days. According with the kind of fishes and means, there are a lot of variety of types. It is typical characteristic connecting several rods into one. They were not only practical fishing tool but became one of articraft with delicate technic in Edo period.

There are five type of bamboos which used for Edo wa-zao :
Marubushi, Daimyo-chiku, Hotei-chiku, Ha-chiku and Yadake. It is essential to choose proper type and quality of bamboos. Lacquer are spread by raw hands, in toer to get finnest finish of rods paintings. It is rods articrafts only who spread the laquer by their own hands.

In Edo period, it was consdered as same lose the rods as to be robbed the sword. So that peoples maintaing the rods with great care by generations.

[ Condition ] Only one set of rods lacks top circle. There are some natural tiredness by aging but they maintain good conditions.

[ Feature ] Batte field tabard was the wind breaker or warm gear in order to avoid the coldness caused by winds on the warriors. There is Kuyo crest on the back, the colors combination of off white and green are very vivid. If you see in the detail, you can find banding pattern of the checkered pattern floating. One of shic tabard.

[ Condition ] No kazari-himo (decorating wire), trace remaining. natural scratches, dirt and loose could be observed. It maitains good shape in general, so that you can appreciate it with display.

[ Feature ] Hauberks a kind of armor tailored linen cloth and sewn with fine steel wires connected to the ring. Hood covering the head, neck, face except the eyes. "Matilla" comes from foreign words that are derived from a mantle. Mantilla's jacket can be used with armor, shields are three types of hauberk protecting both knees hanging from the front of the waist and thighs. Hood is plain and simple. Shape and silhouette of the spikes are good. Mantilla and shields are lined with cherry blossom pattern fabric. Standing collar with brocade fabric in the outside of the crest is embroidered turtle.

[ Feature ] Tsuka is covered with shark skin, slightly round shaped. There is a small tsuba. Ring of holder wire is iron made round shape. Bar has square shape at the bottom, octagonal shape from the bottom of kagi to the top of bar. The bar becomes thick gently as it goes at a tip. Iron taste and color is excellent. The shape is well balanced. Jitte was not only armor of judicial police, but similar purpose of current police identification. Originally, it was used for protecting purpose but sometimes it was used for attack or terminating criminal's maneuver. In old documents, they mentioned "three representing tools for police. Twitch, manliki and jitte". Jitte hold special position, there were tens of jitte schools. It was Muromachi period when jitte came into as an armor.

So-jyutsu is old bujyutsu of Ryukyu (former Okinawa) There are several styles of So-jyutsu : Sai of Tsukeshi Tahaku, Hamahika, Chatanyara, Jigen, Tawada, Hamagoten-yaka-a, Hantaguwa, Kojyo. During Ryuku Kingdom period, Ufuchiku (Head of Police station) and Chikusaji (detective) held the sai, they used it in order to arrest the criminals or leading a crowd.Well fabricated simple design, calm color of iron as many years pass. [Feature] This letter box is very impressive in figure of the peony large drawn and polished sharkskin combination. Togidashi Samegawa (polished sharkskin) is made by polishing the surface of sharkskin which is poured Urushi lacquer. It is often used for making the exterior of Japanese sword, Koshirae.etc. However, it is unusual as for that patterns are detailed like this, and eyes are deprived instinctively by the beauty of nature have led. It is a feature that feeling of quality is also smooth, and the feeling that has it in the hand is desirable. When open it, Japanese Red Urushi color is vivid, and the ring of Hanahishimon made of brass is installed in both sides.

[Condition] The sharkskin has discolored a little at the edge of right side toward, and the figure of peony lacquer come off a little, and there is one crack inside. The secular distortion seems a major cause in them. I think there are no fault that becomes obstruction of appreciation, and it is in excellent condition.
