[ Highlight ] Taikei Naotane was born in 1779 in Yamagata, Dewa Province, and was known as Minobei, and learnt sword making under Suisinshi Masahide. He studied swordsmanship under Suishinshi Masahide. He was transferred from Chikuzen Daijo to Minosuke and died in 1857 at the age of seventy-nine. He practised the theory of restored swordsmanship advocated by his master Suishinshi Masahide, and specialised in Bizen and Soshu styles. He is also known to have travelled to Izu, Enshu, Ise, Shinano, Kyoto and other places to fabricate swords, and to have engraved the name of the place where he was stationed on the stem. This work has well-defined base iron, with a faintly diffuse reflection, a deep nioi flavour, and a blade pattern with a slight nie (boiling) and a reverse pattern in some places, suggesting that it was made in accordance with the old Bizen-den style. Among the works of Taikei Naotane, a large naginata (long blade) in the Shinshin-to Taikan is described as having a blade length of "2 shaku 8 sun (84.1 cm)" with an oshikata on the stem, and this work, which is a sword with a blade length of over 2 shaku 7.5 sun, is the longest sword of Taikei Naotane designated as an important sword so far. Its imposing presence was the talk of the town at the exhibition of newly designated important swords held this year (2023).
