[ Highlight ] Nobuchika became a student of Kurihara Nobuhide in 1864 at the age of 16, and in 1870 he became the son-in-law of Kurihara Nobuhide's second daughter, Kin, and took over the Kurihara family, living in Hongo Honmachi, Tokyo. In 1877, on the occasion of the birth of Prince Kahito (the future Emperor Taisho), he presented him with a sword. He later changed his signature to ‘Nobuchika’ and is known to have made a name for himself as a cutlery swordsmith making small swords and carving knives after the Sword Law was abolished. In his book ‘On Beauty’, the sculptor Kotaro Takamura praised Nobuchika's skill in making blades from tama-hagane (tama-hagane) steel, which was cultivated through his experience as a swordsmith, as well as the dignity of the form and sharpness of the blade. This piece is one of the Nobuchika signatures left over from the short period of created swords at the end of the Edo period, and shows the style of the master well. The sword has a sound appearance with a raw blade, and the rasp marks on the stem and the signature are well preserved and clear.
