[ Highlight ] From its raw appearance and lack of signature, this sword is believed to have been created in the early Edo period, around the time of the Kanbun era. In addition to its jigane forged with a mixture of Koitame and Mokume-grain, the blade pattern consists of a series of gunome with long boiling points and rough boiling in places, suggesting that it was created by a disciple of Awata Tadanaga, particularly Nagatsuna (e.g. ‘Deaf Nagatsuna’). Osaka's new swordsmiths were famous for producing many skilled craftsmen, including Inoue Shinkai, Tsuda Echizen no Kami Sukehiro, and many swordsmiths from the Sekidou Tadanaga, Echigo no Kami Kanesada, Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke, and Osaka Sekido schools. Nagatsuna was one of them. His real name was Kitamura Ichizaemon, and he was a disciple of the first Tadatsuna. He is commonly known as ‘Deaf Nagatsuna’ because some of his works are signed ‘Setsu Fujiwara Deaf Nagatsuna.’

[ Conditions ] There is very slight rust on the blade tip under the ‘yokote’ mark, on the back, and near the centre of the ridge, but otherwise it is in excellent condition.

[ Attachments ] Habaki(suaka-ji, single), shirasaya, bag of shirasaya and Kuashiki museum paper (issued on 27th March Heisei 30(2011)).
