[ Highlight ] Chigusa Arikoto was a court noble of the late Edo period. He established his own distinctive style in the art of waka poetry, having studied under Ichijō Tadayoshi, Prince Arisugawa no Miya Taruhito, and Kuze Michinori, and rose to the rank of Third Class, Senior, and the post of Vice-Commander of the Left Guard. An enthusiast of swords, he forged blades himself and studied sword-smithing techniques from Morioka (Nankai Tarō) Chōson—who served as guardian to Iga-no-kami Kinmichi in Kyoto—and Ōhori Hisahide. He left behind a work in which he inscribed his own poem, ‘The heart of the sword, though sheathed, grows ever sharper,’ in a stylised form of kana upon a blade he had forged himself. Born in 1796 (Kansei 8), he passed away in 1854 (Ansei 1) at the age of fifty-eight. This is a tanto with a blade signature, featuring a flattened profile with a slight curvature. The blade is itame forged, with a gunome-style hamon, and both the jigane and hamon exhibit fine nie.

[ Conditions ] There are some signs of decaying on the stem, but otherwise it is excellent.
