[ Conditions ] Moritsugu "守次" was a Kuroda clan craftsman of the Enpo period. Along with Koretsugu "是次" (a master and cousin of Edo's Sekido Sakon Korekazu "江戸石堂左近是一"), Moritsugu is one of the best swordsmiths of the Fukuoka Sekido school (which, along with the Chikuzen Nobukuni school, represents the twin peaks of the Chikuzen shinto school). He died at the age of 69 on May 6, Genroku 14. The inscriptions include "筑前茎福岡住守次", "筑之前州住守次", "筑州福岡住守次", "筑前国権三兵衛尉守次", "筑前国福岡住半三兵衛尉守次為六十七歳造之" ("Moritsugu, a resident of Fukuoka in Chikuzen Province", "Moritsugu, a resident of Chikunomae Province", "Moritsugu, a resident of Fukuoka in Chikuzen Province", and "Moritsugu, a resident of Fukuoka in Chikuzen Province, made at the age of sixty-seven", etc) Many of the works of the Fukuoka Sekido school have a relatively deep sori curved edge, and this work also has a tendency to have a sori deep curve. Moritsugu is known for his unique sugu-ha, or "head of a squid", but this work is a valuable example of his skill with suguha straight blades. The distinctive inscriptions in a mixture of block, line and slave script are also a highlight.
