[ Highlight ] Sennri Norihisa Yamagami was a swordsmith from Niigata Prefecture, born in 1940. His real name was Shigenori Yamagami, and his original name was Norihira; he adopted the character «則» (Nori) from his real name and the character «久» (Hisashi) from his father, Sennri Akihisa Yamagami—who was also his master—to form his swordsmith name. «Sennri» is derived from splitting the character «重» (Shige) into its upper and lower parts; it was the swordsmith name used by his father (real name: Shigetsugu) during the war. A disciple of Kasama Shigezumi, his father—who was named Shōkyū by Kurihara Akihide at the Japanese Sword Forging Training Institute in 1934—served as a swordsmith commissioned by the Imperial Army during the war. After the war, he conducted research into applying the hamon of modern swords to the jigane of ancient masterpieces. Norihisa further explored the age of creation for works with a distinct沸 (nie) pattern, such as those by Sōshū Sadamune and Tsuda Sukehiro. This piece boasts a majestic tachi form, with both the base and hamon displaying fine, bright ji-nie; as you can see in the enlarged image in the upper section, the ji-nie extends well into the centre of the groove.
[ Conditions ] There are a few minor signs of rust and some slight flaws, but overall it is excellent.
