[ Highlight ]
Nice form. It can appreciate finish of ji and ha, which are both well done. The swordsmith with signature "尾州住大道" is out of directory but he was very good at creating the sword so that it look to later studies. KOSUKEGAWA Mitsuaki "小助川光顕" was a samurai of Yajima clan at the end of Edo period. Effective Meiji restoration, he took his carrier in law field.(*1) He worked as judge, moved several places as new transfer. In Meiji 32, he assisted the establishment of Catholic Yamahana church in Sapporo.(*2) In his last years, Taishô era, he was known as connaiseur on swords appreciation. (*3) Sayagakis showed the fact that this yari was sent as gift to the painter IKOMA Daihi , from KOSUKEGAWA Kôken, calling him with polite word in letter to friend as gakei "雅兄". Sword bag which attached same time combined together, which has same sayagaki signature in Indian ink. IKOMA Daihi (born 1857 - died 1922) was an ex-Honjô han clan samurai. Till his father, his family served for the clan as karô, chief retainer of daimyô. He learned poets and essays at Kyôto, Nan-ga painting at Ô-saka (*4). As chief work, he had on-the-scene of large earth quake at Sakata "酒田大震災実況図", designated cultural property of Sakata city (*5). As historical matierial, this work prove the communication between sword lovers, who lived same period, end of Edo and Meiji periods. It is interested why this sword was choosen as commemorative gift.
