[ Highlight ] The Nioh school began with Kiyotsuna in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) and continued to flourish throughout the Muromachi period (1333-1568) and partly into the Shintō period (1333-1573). According to the Noami Book, the name 'Niou' derives from the fact that the first Kiyotsuna saved Niou-son by cutting an iron chain with his created swords during a fire at Niou-do. There is also a theory that the name comes from the name of a place in the region, Nio-no-sho. The Suo area developed manors early on, and in the Heian period it was associated with the territories of various temples, including Todaiji in the southern part of the capital. This piece shows the highlights of the Nioh school, such as the low burnished straight blade style with ko-gunomes (small alternating lines and curves), ko-ashi (short legs), a slightly nie and slightly sunagashi dripping blade and an itame forged surface with changing and a slightly itame-hada appearance.
