[ Highlight ] In addition to the Yamato-style features of the sword, such as the wide construction of the ridges and frayed edges, the sword is also characterised by the deep curvature of the tip of the blade, the blade pattern, which is a mixture of coarse and round-grained patterns, and the blackish colour of the blade, and is therefore identified as a sword made by the Uda Hirakuni. The Uda school is a school of sword makers that originated with Kunimitsu, an old priest who moved from Yamato to Etchu (now part of Toyama Prefecture) around the time of the Bunpo era at the end of the Kamakura period. After that, the school flourished greatly during the Muromachi period, and continued on into the Shinto period. Hirakuni is said to have been a pupil of Kunihisa, and created swords in Etchu around the beginning of the Muromachi period, around the time of the Eikyo era. There were several generations with the same name around the same time.
