Sword rack, with crossed out crest in circle, made of deer antler |
[ Periode ] Showa 昭和 9(1934) |
[ Size ] length : 43cm, width : 25cm, height : 74cm |
[ Feature ] The deer's imposing three-tiered, gently branching antlers give the sword-holder a somewhat elegant, rounded base. This item was handed down to an old family in Aomori Prefecture, with the famous Shimazu family crest, "Maru ni Jumonji" (circle with a cross in front), engraved in large letters on the front of the wooden base. The inscription on the bottom of the base, dated July 14, 1942, indicates that the gentleman named Tadashi, together with his mother, commissioned a craftsman named Yuhei Akagawa (Noh mask carver of Akita) to make this holder in 1934. Nobuyuki Nambu, the ninth lord of the Hachinohe clan, was the 14th son of Shigehide Shimazu, the eighth lord of the Satsuma clan, and was admitted to the Hachinohe clan in 1838 as the successor to Nobumasa VIII, whose first and second sons died young. At that time, the Satsuma Clan was in the midst of the "Oyura Disturbance", a struggle for the succession of Narioki, the tenth lord of the clan, and Nobunori, along with his brother Nagahiro Kuroda, the eleventh lord of the Fukuoka Clan, worked hard to retain Nariakira, the eleventh lord of the Satsuma Clan. When the Boshin War began amidst a shaky shogunate system, the Hachinohe clan, like the other Tohoku clans, was under pressure to join the Ouetsu clan alliance. As a result, the Hachinohe clan did not take part in any major battles and was not blamed for the aftermath of the war, thus minimizing the casualties of the Boshin War. In 1869 (Meiji 2), Nobunori became governor of the Hachinohe domain, and with the abolition of the domain in 1871 (Meiji 4), the Hachinohe domain became Hachinohe Prefecture and was later incorporated into Aomori Prefecture. [ Condition ] Excellent. The glue at the joint between the corner and the base has withered with age and is slightly wobbly. |

Spear head for bear dedication"熊槍" |
[ Period ] Before begining of Meiji era |
[ Size ] length : 38cm, width :5.62cm, thickness : 2.24cm, weight : 679g length form top to neck : 21.7cm |
[ Feature ] This bear spear is said to have been used by the matagi of Tono. Matagi are hunters who have existed in the mountains of the central and north-eastern regions of Japan and have inherited the ancient Japanese hunting culture. Matagi spears have an iron pipe-like handle of about 6' long with interchangeable spearheads, with a narrower blade for medium and small beasts and a wider blade for hunting bears. This spear is a thin, flat triangular with a shinogi on one side. There were two forms of bear hunting: makihunting and anaguma hunting. For makihunting, in which a large group of people surrounds a bear, chases it up and kills it in a waiting area, a spear was considered reliable, as old-fashioned guns could not cope when they missed. It is believed that the spear ended its role when the Murata gun came into use. The Engishiki (Engi Shiki) contains provisions for the delivery of bear liver and skins, and it is thought that Makigari hunting had been practised before the Heian period (794-1185). Minamoto no Yoritomo's Makigari hunting in Fuji is well known. [ Condition ] The iron handle to which the ear was adhered has broken off and become a remnant. |
