[ Feature ]

Above part of barrel, there is a family crest (a wood sorrel in the circle), bottom part of barrel, there is a signature. A matchlock for horse-riding, muzzle diameter 5 monnme (about 1.5cm)

Shimaya Shirobei was gunsmith who worked a Sakai, Settsu province. The number of gunsmiths in Sesshu province was very high as same as Kôshû province compared with other provinces. (cf. "全国鉄砲鍛冶銘地域別分類" by Ogasawara Nobuo and Yasuda Osamu). It could be considered that the activities of gun making was so high there.

Sakai and Kunitomo produced one half since they made many variety and numuber of guns. They shared half each other. The signature had the name of store (this gun has "嶋屋") so that it could be considered the gun made by continuous operations, production, manufacturing and distribution. It was one of characteristics of the city Sakai, where big commercialized city. Matchlock, which arrived Tangegashima island in Tenbun "天文" 12(1543), spread nationwide and changed the way of battle in a few years. So that it much contributed to the unification of later middle ages of Japan.

Matchlock was made one by one, by gunsmiths. All of them are one off. It did not become standardized goods. In modern era, they were not practical enough as weapons. However, they have much personality, so that they are loved as craft object or work of art even today.

Beside of signature, there is a signature number five "五".

Smooth feeling in hand, moderate weight, round shape and length easy to use.
The signature "明珍宗之 五十一代". MYÔCHIN Muneyuki is known by his invention furin hibashi which makes beautiful sound.

[ Feature ] Shallow sori attached, chû-kissaki form. Nakago-saki in iri-yama-gata shape expressed carefully. When real blade stored into shirasaya, instead of it, a wooden sword stored into koshirae, in order to maintain saya, tsuka-seppas, and tsuba into one ensemble. It is called tsunagi. Copper made habaki attached as well.

[ Feature ] A tachi holder tachi-kake "太刀掛" in all black ebony which is very hard to seeand earn in recent years. Deep wood grain color tone which enhance the existence of tachi-goshirae "太刀拵". Leaf of hollyhock shape has been shaped (as its pedestal). Degnified one. Sturdy, thick and heavy finish can hold precious tachi-kosirae firmly.

[ Conditions ] Due to sun-rays, it turns a little yellow. There are some bending traces.

A gift Kenjyô-zame "献上鮫"

[ Feature ] In Edo period, imported shark skin via port of Nagasaki, once confirmed and accredited as Tokugawa shôgunate item, it was said that sold at auction. Highest rank item was cleaned throughly, keeping original form, wrapping the middle center high board roughly 2 shaku (60 cm).Then they were decorating with gold brocade or silk making as gifts. Feudal lords daimyos offered them Shôgunate. This was called decorated shark skin kazari-zame "飾り鮫" as well. Feudal lords daimyos send them each other.
This kenjyô-zame uses magnific shark skin, small grains surrounding big splendid grain like a petal of chrysanthemum. The grains have luster. It shines delicately when it receives light. It is a very precious item keeping original shape when offered by feudal lords daimyôs.

[ Feature ] Calm and aged color shows its appearance. Relatively large size hand hold wooden safe.

"陣笠 丸に十文字紋"
Jingasa : maru ni jû-mon-ji mon
[ Period ] Edo, end of
[ Size ] Diameter : 34cm, height : 13cm
[ Feature ]
A hole at the top of jingasa, "座金物"(zagane-mono) placed. Gold painted design, considering the intention of "星冑" which composed of some plates, displaced in tuns with black-red lacquerd ones.

Family crest, "丸に十字"(cross in circle), in front. "総角"(agemaki) is attached in the hole of agemaki-tsuki of back. Gold painting was made for inside.

Family crest, "丸に十字"(cross in circle), was famous of that of Shimazu clan in Edo period. In other fuedral lords,four families, such as Ô-kubo, Naitô, Katô and Mori. Other ten "旗本"(hatamotos) used this mark. ("綱要日本紋章学"(compendium of Japan heraldry) by NUMATA Yorisuke (published by "新人物往来社" in Shôwa 52)

There is a hole at the top of hachi, part of kabuto. It is called "天辺の穴"(hole of heaven) or "息出の穴"(hole of breathing) . There is a "座金物"(metal fitting), called "八幡座"(Hachiman-za). It is prohibited putting finger in since the place has been believed that "神"(kami) resting holy place.("日本の甲冑"(armour of Japan) edited by "日本甲冑武具研究会" published by "徳間書店"(Tokuma publishing) in Shôwa 38
)

[ Condtions ] It can be observed tiny scratches in general, however, they are not significant. It maintains fine conditions.

"面頬"
Menpô

[ Feature ] "頬当"(hô-ate), "烈勢面"(ressei-men) and "髭"(mustache) are attached below eye holes. "下"(sage) is composed of 4 steps. Inside is red lacquered.

"頬当", "烈勢面", and "髭" under eyes are remaining. "下"(sage) is consist of four plates. Back side colored in "朱" (vermilion-lacquered). Metal fitting, called "折釘"(ori-gane), tying strings, attached.

[ Condtions ] Back side Vermilion-lacquer of "下" was repainted.

"陣笠 丸に三引両紋"

"天(ten)" thickness : 0.82cm, "地(chi)" thickness : 0.45cm, "天(ten)" weight 145.4g, "地(chi)" weight 81.3g
[ Feature ] According with the book, titled "提灯陣笠御布告書 (官版 御用御書物所 須原屋茂兵衛・和泉屋市兵衛)"(Chô-chin jingasa regulation notice)(officially published and printed, SUWARAYA Mohei, IZUMIYA Ichibei), jingasa with "紋并筋裏トモ金" should be used by "非役華族及非役四位以上"(non-office but honored peerage and non-office but higher than fourth rank)

This jingasa has same family crest on "庇裏" (hisashi-ura(back of visor))

Five families used "三引両" from Tokugawa era and later (e.g. : "浅野"(Asa-no), 安部(A-be), 間部(Ma-be), 三浦(Mi-ura) and 分部(Wake-be))( cf. : "綱要日本紋章学" ("Compendium of Japanese heraldry" by NUMATA Yori-suke, published by "新人物往来社"(shin-jin-butsu-ô-rai-sha publishing ) Showa52(1977)) [ Condtions ] Front page has some dart and scratches caused by years. However, inside pages maintain excellent condition.

"陣笠 剣梅鉢紋"

[ Feature ] According with the book, titled "提灯陣笠御布告書 (官版 御用御書物所 須原屋茂兵衛・和泉屋市兵衛)"(Chô-chin jingasa regulation notice)(officially published and printed, SUWARAYA Mohei, IZUMIYA Ichibei), jingasa with "紋金筋銀裏朱"(mon-kin-suji-gin-ura-shu) was used by "判任"(junior official)

It was considered that the distribution of using "梅紋"(plumn pattern) was fit with those of the places faith for "天満宮"(ten-man-gû) done. Specifically, "美濃"(Mino), "加賀"(Kaga), east part of "美作"(Mima-saka), "苫田"(Toma-ta) and "勝田"(Katsu-ta). Family of "有元"(Ari-moto), "植月"(Uetsuki), "鷹取"(Takatori), or "田等"(Tatô)( cf. : "綱要日本紋章学" ("Compendium of Japanese heraldry" by NUMATA Yori-suke, published by "新人物往来社"(shin-jin-butsu-ô-rai-sha publishing ) Showa52(1977))

History of Edo wa-zao (Japanese fishing rods) began from the time of Kyoho. Initially, it was part time job of Samurai. In the end of Edo period, first generation To-saku made huge development so that there were a lot of lovers. They joined his school, then some of them became the master of making fishing rods. Then the technic had developped to the level of now a days. According with the kind of fishes and means, there are a lot of variety of types. It is typical characteristic connecting several rods into one. They were not only practical fishing tool but became one of articraft with delicate technic in Edo period.

There are five type of bamboos which used for Edo wa-zao :
Marubushi, Daimyo-chiku, Hotei-chiku, Ha-chiku and Yadake. It is essential to choose proper type and quality of bamboos. Lacquer are spread by raw hands, in toer to get finnest finish of rods paintings. It is rods articrafts only who spread the laquer by their own hands.

In Edo period, it was consdered as same lose the rods as to be robbed the sword. So that peoples maintaing the rods with great care by generations.

[ Condition ] Only one set of rods lacks top circle. There are some natural tiredness by aging but they maintain good conditions.

Hassetsu-ben(Eight node whip)

[ Feature ] A multiple node whip used in one of Chinese Martial arts, "Hassetu-ben". Eight iron bars are connected by iron rings. Both ends are relatively thick, one side is bar for grip winding cords, opposite side becomes weight to utilize centrifugal force.

[ Feature ] In small size, simple modeling is beautiful and clean. Robust structure. It is Jitte of iron based. Be comparable to the hands of tens Jitte is the origin of the name. As armor-auxiliary tool, it is used to protection from enemy blade. Overpowered the criminal with a combination of attacks and hit-poke, a jiu-jitsu.

[ Feature ] Battle of sea of Japan(Tsushima) in Russo-Japanese war, the commander of the combined fleet, Heihachiro Togo issued the signal "The fate of the Empire depends upon this event. Let every man do his utmost" and put the Z flag. Later part of his message carved on the column.
